Sick Leave

When you are unwell, it can sometimes be appropriate to take a leave of absence from work, either for your own recovery, or for the benefit of your colleagues.
A doctor's note (fit-note, sick-note or Med3) can be provided when necessary, however we are unable to provide these until you have missed 7 calendar days of work.  Statutory Sick Pay regulations state that an employer is required to accept self certification from the employee to cover the first 7 days.  Some employers may insist on a Dr's note for this period, and we can provide one on a private basis (for a small fee) in this situation, usually payable by your employer.

If your employer requires a 'self certificate', then more information, as well as a downloadable form can be obtained here:

After completion of the self-certificate period, we would usually want to see you to understand the cause of your absence at this point, but can sometimes speak to you over the phone, or else be given supporting evidence eg a discharge summary confirming you had surgery etc, before issuing a Dr's note.
If further sick-leave is required, we prefer to see you face-to-face in surgery on at least 'every other' issue of a Dr's note, to assess your situation; however telephone review by appointment will suffice on the other occasions, or alternatively you can use our new e-consult service to request a follow-up sicknote.
